DIVERSITY TASK FORCE AT FELLOWSHIP

Recognizing the cultural changes in our surrounding community and that all people are made in the image of God, in 2004 we formed the Diversity Task Force to foster understanding, reduce prejudice, build relationships, and engage the congregation in tackling racial and GLBT justice problems.

Guest speakers invited by the task force have included an Indian Hindu couple, three Middle Eastern women (1 Christian and 2 Muslim), and a person from the gay/lesbian community.  As a sign of mutual friendship and respect, we have also visited a Hindu temple and a Muslim mosque.

As a result of our growing interfaith ventures, we celebrated with our new Muslim friends at a picnic/barbecue, raised funds for Pakistan earthquake relief, and cooperatively renovated a house in inner city Detroit.

Currently, Fellowship LC is engaged in a discernment process about becoming a “Reconciling in Christ” (RIC) congregation, a church that intentionally welcomes gays, lesbians, and trans-gendered people as full members of the body of Christ.

As we move forward, it is our hope that we can cultivate open, honest discussion about topics that relate to religion, race, cultural differences, able-bodied-ness, gender, and sexuality.

By the grace of God, we believe that differences can be valuable assets, and not always detrimental barriers.
