Our History
-
1970
- Fellowship Lutheran Church is established as a mission experiment
by the Michigan Synod of the American Lutheran Church.
The intent is to provide a non-traditional place of worship for those
who are un-churched or dissatisfied with the rigidity of traditional
teaching, worship, and organizational styles.
Emphasis is placed on informality, tolerance, acceptance,
flexibility, strengthening the family unit, and community service.
Worship services were initially held in the junior high school
directly north of the current building, and then in the house directly south
of the current building.
-
1973 - In keeping with the
goals established in Fellowship’s charter, the current, multi-purpose
building is erected. At this
time, Kinder Kampus Nursery Center is established as a quality pre-school
open to the entire community. This
made the former building (house) available for use by the Phoenix Center, a
family and youth counseling organization.
The new building was also made available for use by scout troops,
Jazzercize classes, bridal and baby showers, and other functions.
-
1978
- Under the leadership of Pastor David Blake, Fellowship leaves
‘mission’ status and becomes self-sufficient.
The congregation continues its dedication to community service
through its emergency food pantry, donations to local rescue missions and
shelters, participation in Habitat for Humanity and many other outreach
programs. We continue to
emphasize that the building is not the church, the people are, and that
daily life is the primary setting for carrying out our Christian calling.
We seek to carry out the work of Christ by reaching out to all people
and by doing all ministry with a global awareness consistent with the
understanding of God as Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier of all.
-
2002
- After 30 years of ministry at Fellowship, Pastor Blake retires,
beginning a 3 year period of transition.
During this time, the mortgage is retired; major renovations to the
church building and house are begun; and, blended, inter-generational
worship is adopted. The Sunday
School program is also reorganized.
-
2005
- In June 2005, Pastor
Kurt Fangmeier is called as Pastor of Fellowship.
With his gifts in multicultural and justice ministry, Pastor Kurt is
leading us to re-envision our mission in light of our increasingly
ethnically and linguistically diverse community.
